About Us
Founded in 1994 in Sean’s honour, the festival has grown into a cherished annual gathering rooted in the rich folk traditions of North Kerry. Sean’s songs, known for their warmth, wit, and humanity, continue to resonate today, receiving regular airplay on both local and national radio and inspiring new generations of musicians and storytellers.
Over the past three decades, the festival has welcomed some of Ireland’s most renowned ballad singers and songwriters, including Liam Clancy, Jim McCann, Danny Doyle, Seán Keane, Brendan Grace, Francie Conway, The Furey Brothers, The Kilkennys, Meadhbh Walsh, the late Mickey MacConnell, Pete St. John, Brendan Graham, and Philip King. Their performances, alongside countless emerging voices, have shaped the festival into a vibrant celebration of Irish culture and creativity.
At the heart of the weekend are our much-loved Ballad Singing and Storytelling Competitions. These events continue to attract participants from across Ireland and beyond, with over 1,500 original ballads submitted to date—each one adding to the living tradition that Sean held so dear. With the generous support of IMRO and our dedicated sponsors, we are proud to continue offering meaningful opportunities and prizes that encourage and sustain this unique art form.
Storytelling remains a cornerstone of the festival through the Mick McCarthy Storytelling Competition, honouring a rich oral tradition that is deeply woven into Irish culture. Supported by Lionel McCarthy, Sean’s nephew, this competition celebrates the legacy of Mick McCarthy and his influential venue, The Embankment in Tallaght, a key hub of the Irish folk revival.
Now in our 32nd year, the Sean McCarthy Memorial Weekend Festival remains a heartfelt tribute—not only to Sean’s extraordinary talent, but to his kindness, generosity, and the spirit of community he inspired.
This website offers you a gateway to everything the festival has to offer—from our latest programme of events to a growing archive of photographs, videos, and memories that capture the story of the festival over the years.
We invite you to explore, to listen, and to be part of a tradition that continues to bring people together through music, song, and story.
