The Rambling House

History of Finuge Village.

At the heart of Irish tradition lies the Rambling House — a place where stories are shared, songs are sung, and community comes alive. Rooted in rural Ireland, these gatherings were once a cornerstone of social life, where neighbours would come together by the fireside to pass on music, folklore, and local history.

In Finuge, this cherished tradition continues at Sheehan’s Thatched House, where the Rambling House was first established by Peggy O’Connell, whose vision helped revive and sustain this unique part of Irish culture in the locality. Now going strong for almost 20 years, her legacy lives on in the warm, welcoming atmosphere that defines each gathering.
Our Rambling House takes place on the first Monday of every month, bringing together musicians, singers, storytellers, and listeners of all ages. There is no stage and no spotlight — just a shared space where everyone is invited to take part or simply sit back and enjoy.
From well-known ballads to newly shared stories, each night is shaped by those who gather, making every Rambling House a truly special and authentic experience.

The Rambling House is also a key part of the Sean McCarthy Memorial Weekend, honouring Sean’s legacy as one of Ireland’s most beloved songwriters. His music, along with the rich tradition of storytelling and song, continues to inspire these evenings of connection and culture.

Whether you’re a visitor or a local, you are always welcome to pull up a chair, share a tune, or enjoy the warmth of a truly Irish night.
